If Your Edge Fits in a Toggle, How Long Until Everyone Has It?

The feature you spent months mastering is now a default setting available to anyone with a card. That's not the end of skill. It's the end of one kind of edge, and it forces a question about where yours actually sits. The honest answer is in the arrangements behind the spend, not the settings in front of it.

The feature you spent months mastering is now a default setting.

Manual bidding, audience stacking, dayparting, the exclusions that used to separate a good buyer from a new one: the platforms have folded most of it into automated campaign types that are switched on by default and available to everyone with a card. Meta has said publicly it wants ads to run themselves, creative and targeting included. Google's been on the same road since Performance Max.

One buyer summed up the effect in a line: "The buttons that agencies used to push are kinda gone by now." Then answered his own question: "did the barrier to entry drop, so anyone can spend now? Sure."

Sure. Sit with that word for a second, because it's doing a lot of work.

The uncomfortable arithmetic

The vague version of this story is "AI is changing everything," which lets you avoid the arithmetic. Here's the narrow version, and it's worse.

An advantage built on a feature that anyone can switch on is an advantage that anyone can switch on. It doesn't matter how well you used it, or how long it took you to learn. Once the platform does it for the buyer who started last month, the auction stops paying either of you for it. Whatever margin came from being better at the machine gets competed away, and the platform is perfectly happy to take it. One buyer, watching the same thing from inside a campaign: "Let you grind away for minimal profits for weeks, then take it all back with two days of absolutely terrible performance." He blamed the platform. He wasn't entirely wrong.

That doesn't mean skill is gone. Creative judgement, offer selection, measurement, knowing when to leave an ad set alone: those still matter, and the buyers who have them still outperform. It means the replicable part of your edge is being replicated, in public, on a schedule you don't control. If that part was most of your edge, you already know it, and you've known it since the last update.

The part no update hands to the guy who started last month

So ask the question the toggle forces. What does your best competitor have that they couldn't get from the same dashboard you use?

It's not a setting. It's a set of arrangements.

The payout they negotiated, rather than the one on the public board. The cap that's theirs, agreed with someone who could agree it. Payment terms that don't turn their own ad spend into an interest-free loan. The person at the advertiser or the network who answers their message and can move a number, because they've met. Those don't live in the campaign builder. No platform update ships them. And the buyer who started last month, with the same automated campaign type you have, doesn't have any of them, which is exactly why they matter more now than they did when the settings were the edge.

That's not the only thing that matters in 2026. It's the part that's hardest to copy, which makes it the part worth building while the rest gets levelled. And it's a part a buyer can go and get, in person, on a specific date, from specific people.

Where the arrangements get made

Affiliate Grand Slam is in Rome, 2 to 5 November, at Fiera Roma. Two examples of who's confirmed and what the arrangement conversation is with each.

TerraLeads owns and runs its own consumer offers and pays partners per sale; the conversation there is the whole list above, payout, cap, terms, with someone whose company sets them. ClickBank is a marketplace; the conversation is which offers in your vertical have owners looking for direct partners and what the listed terms actually leave room for. And TikTok, Meta and Google are exhibiting with staff, which is worth a walk for a different reason: you can put the question about what the automation is actually optimising for to a person, and the answer, whatever it is, tells you where the settings edge ended.

A confirmed name doesn't tell you who attends or whether they'll accept. It tells you who's worth requesting, and the arrangement conversation is what you request them for.

Bring your numbers and the one thing you'd change

The AGS Rome 2026 Welcome Pack lists the confirmed companies by vertical with a line on what each does. Pick the ones worth an arrangement conversation and fill the five-people worksheet: company, what you run that they'd care about, the one thing you'd want changed. If you promote offers or work with affiliate networks, apply for the complimentary Affiliate Pass with proof of activity; review takes up to 24 hours. Once approved, the Match App opens and you request them. They accept or decline; the accepted ones are what you prepare for.

What you'd discuss is exactly the list above: traffic fit, payout structure, cap, payment terms. Bring your volume, honestly. Bring the one thing you'd change, with a number. Bring the thing you can do that the toggle can't: a creative angle, a geo, a traffic type they're under-represented on.

The platform is going to keep automating the part of the job it can automate. Spend the time that frees up on the part it can't.

Fill the five-people worksheet with the arrangements you'd want, and check who on the list could make them.

Internal note

quoted lines are [A] found and exact. Meta and Google statements are public positions, stated generally. Two examples with roles plus platforms. "A confirmed name doesn't tell you who attends." Accept/decline. Skill not dismissed; the replicable part is the argument. Pack bridge above the block.
